Italy Hates Tall People

Have you ever been to Italy?
If so, you know it's made for short people. From doorways, to showers, to seating, to hanging decor, there's nowhere a tall person fit super comfortably.

For our honeymoon we decided to travel to Venice and Florence. It was such a great trip, but we laughed the whole way at how hard it was for Andy to fit places.

Several times the Italians would make comments about how tall he is. "Why aren't you shorter?"

But one of the funniest places we discovered was the Doge's Palace. Underneath are the tiny, depressing spaces where they used to keep prisoners. We walked through and continually came across suddenly low ceilings like this one.

Andy is a whole head taller than the ceiling. It made for some uncomfortable squeezes and some great laughs.

Can Tall People Ride Horses?

Hey there, Andy writing.

Have you ever if wondered can a tall people ride horses? What if happens if your horse is too small? Will my legs scrape the ground?

Well just a few short months into dating Morgan we had a date go terribly wrong. It was one of those dates where no matter what you do nothing goes to plan and at the end of the night I was so embarrassed.

I pride myself on having amazing dates and that night was anything but. So I told Morgan for our next date I was going to redeem myself. Our next date would be one we remembered forever.

I started looking for a great date idea. I searched the internet high and how looking for something legendary, until I finally found it. A place called "Callihan Adventure Trails" in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We could drive up and ride their horses (with a guide) through some beautiful mountain trails. I did not tell Morgan what we were doing, just to be ready when I picked her up and to wear her outdoor shoes. 

"Surprise! We're going horseback riding!" Little did I know she had taken horseback riding lessons in middle school. She knew what she was doing. I had ridden a horse one or two times before but I had no idea what I was doing. The weather could not have been more perfect!

Our trail guides were kind and patient. They even gave me the largest horse they had! He was a BIG MAMA JAMMA but had a super gentle soul. He kinda moseyed around wherever he went. We had such a great time despite all my doubts on not having a jockey build. 

 Next on the list: Camels through the Sahara!

Do Tall People Fit In Their Cars?

Hey again; Andy here!
Today I want to talk about the struggles of finding a suitable vehicle for someone as tall as I am.

I am always trying to push the car seat back as far as it will go only to be disappointed it does not go back farther. Oftentimes, it feels like this.

When I bought my current car I faced quite the problem. I know which cars look cool but will they actually fit me? How can I shop online for a car if I cannot sit in it and see if I fit?

What we ended up doing was going to a local CarMax, and not test driving.... We did what I call a test sitting. I would get the keys, get in, and then pull the seat back as far as it would go. "Nope this one wont work. On to the next one." We did this over and over and over. We tried trucks and we tried cars. We tried SUVs and we tried crossovers. After doing this for pretty much every style of car they had we came up with a short list of cars which I could actually fit in. (Also I drive a lot for work so I REALLY needed to fit in it.)

One of the cars really stood out though. It was a 2012 Chevy Cruze. Its not a very large car but the seat goes all the way back and will even touch the back seat. It even gets 30 miles per gallon! Armed with my shortlist and my new preferred car I left the CarMax (Sorry sales man) and started looking online.

I ended up finding one for $10,000 when it was worth $14,000 because someone had traded in a manual six speed Chevy to a Toyota dealership and it had been sitting there forever. The dealer just wanted it gone! I was so excited I had found a car I could fit in!

There is the slight issue that I cannot fit three people in my car because there is zero room behind my seat when I drive... but hey, I fit!

Why Is Seating Made For Shorties?

Hello! Andy typing...

Recently Morgan and I celebrated our one year anniversary! One year ago I married the most amazing woman in the whole world and for our first dance song of our wedding we danced to "Die a Happy Man" by Thomas Rhett. So to celebrate, what better way than by going to a Thomas Rhett concert? We could be the cheesy couple who tries to slow dance in the tiny aisles.

We bought the tickets and the weekend of our anniversary we went to downtown Atlanta and had a blast. The show was incredible, Thomas Rhett puts on one heck of a concert and Kenny Chesney was touring with him as well. Everything was great except for one small issue.... my legs.

I am in a no win situation. When I sit down my legs have no where to go. They are either jammed into the hard plastic of the chair in front of me or to the side hitting the person next to me. Then when I stand up then I can see just fine over the crowd but anyone behind me has no hope of seeing.

It is not just concerts where I have this issue though! If I take Morgan to the movies and dinner for a romantic date, I do not fit in the movie theater seats and more than likely I will bang my knees on the dinner table too. When I am at church I like to be up front and participate in worship but its really awkward when your head sticks up so high you can see it on the screen above everyone else's.

I'm not asking for much. Just being able to fit in the world... is that too much to ask? Apparently so. Do any of you have these problems? If so how do you handle them?

15 Questions Every Tall Person Gets Asked

Before you ask, let me answer the 15 most popular questions I get.

1) How tall are you?

I'm 6’7”.

2) Do you play basketball?

Yes! And also mini golf...

3) Did you play in college?

No, but I did play in high school. And now I play in the mornings before work.

4) Are your parents really tall?

No, my Dad’s about 6’1”.

5) So where did your height come from?

The mailman... just kidding! In reality, we don’t know. I’m just crazy tall.

6) Who’s your favorite basketball team?

I’ve inherited a love of the Kentucky Wildcats. Blue blood runs thick through my veins! 

7) Do you follow the NBA?

Only once I get withdrawals when college basketball ends.

8) My brother/son/cousin/person-I-barely-know is also very tall.

Oh great! (What am I supposed to say to this?)

9) How tall is your wife?

She’s 5’7”. She’s tall without being crazy tall.

10) I bet your kids are going to be tall!

Yes, all 10 of them. I’m planning to have a basketball team. 5 sets of twins, so they all have someone to practice with! Just kidding, we’ll probably have 2.

11) Were you always super tall?

I was always taller than everyone else. I was 6’1” going into my freshman year of high school and 6’4” at the end of that summer.

12) Do you play any other sports?

I was on the wrestling team in high school. And I also play the drums.

13) Are you in a band?

I used to be in high school, but now I just play for fun.

14) What do you do for a living?

I’m a mechanical engineer. My company designs and installs HVAC systems in skyscrapers and high rises all over Atlanta. I work with customers to generate an estimate on what they need and what it will cost.

15) I bet you get these questions a lot.
